Alison Bechdel is an American cartoonist whose comic strip, Dykes to Watch Out For, began in 1986 and is carried in numerous gay and lesbian newspapers. (The strip is currently on hold while Bechdel finishes her second memoir, Love Life: A Case Study.)
In 2006 Houghton Mifflin published Bechdel's first memoir, Fun Home. This brought Bechdel widespread attention, and the book was nominated for several awards, winning the Stonewall Book award, two Eisner awards, and others. It spent two weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list and was named the best book of 2006 by both Time Magazine and (in the nonfiction category) Entertainment Weekly.
