Mission Statement

This website aims to provide you, the casual reader of comics, with a clear and comprehensive guide to the books that are available to you, based on your tastes. In other words, if you’re new to comics, we’ll show you where to start. Then, as time goes on and you get more comfortable with the medium, we’ll show you how to expand your horizons.

After all, comic books are beginning to be mainstream. They’re being covered in the New Yorker, the New York Times, Time magazine, etc. But for most people, it’s hard to know where to start. Chances are, you’ve seen the graphic novels section at your local chain bookstore and been overwhelmed by the sheer number of titles you’ve never heard of and know nothing about, and then underwhelmed by what you find when you open a few of them to see what they have to offer inside.

Your local comic book shop is no help either. Chances are it’s filled with nothing but superhero comics and even if you don’t know much about comics, you’re sure that power-fantasy soap operas in spandex aren’t for you. Try asking the guy behind the counter what you, as a reader new to comics, should try , and he will either hand you what he considers to be “the coolest superhero story ever,” or—more likely—answer your query with a blank stare.

So what do you do? Well, this website is here to help. Unlike other comic-related websites aimed at the dedicated comic book fan, MoreThanSuperhumans.com is designed for those of us who haven’t been reading comic book for the last 20 years of our lives. It’s a user-friendly database that lets you know exactly what’s available and provides you with choices based on your preferences. It features comprehensive lists for every possible category: Looking for something appropriate for your 12-year-old nephew? Click on Age-Appropriate Comics. Looking for something for your bookworm of a dad? Click on Comics for Scholars.

Just Who's Running Things Here, Anyway?
More Than Superhumans is run by a guy who likes comics, but whose friends aren't big fans. So he created this site (at a friend's suggestion) to aid other people who are like his many friends who enjoy reading some comic books, but who have no interest at all in the more prevalent superhero genre.

If you have any questions about or suggestions for these pages, please leave us a comment and we'll happily get back to you. We hope you enjoy the site!
