Eclipse Comics was an American comic book publisher founded by Jan and Dean Mullaney in 1977. Beginning in the early days of the so-called direct market, Eclipse focused on alternatives to the superhero-dominated comics of the time and helped to pioneer the concept of royalties and creators' rights in an industry known for its exploitive business practices.
In 1986 Eclipse lost most of its back-stock of titles in a flood, and in 1994, with the implosion of the direct market distribution system (brought on by Marvel's disastrous acquisition of Heroes World), Eclipse closed its doors permanently.
