R. Crumb

(1943- )

Robert Crumb is the preeminent underground comix cartoonist, whose first comic book, Zap Comix, was published in 1968. He is best known outside the comic book world for illustrating the album Cheap Thrills by Big Brother and the Holding Company, and for creating Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural, and the phrase "Keep on Truckin'." He was also the subject of a critically acclaimed 1994 documentary by Terry Zwigoff.

Born in Philadelphia, Crumb worked for the American Greetings Corporation as a color separator and greeting card illustrator before he moved to San Francisco in the late '60s and kick-started the underground comix movement.

In the late '90s Crumb moved to southern France with his wife and daughter (both of whom are also cartoonists).
