Image Comics was founded in 1992 by seven of the most popular comic book artists working for Marvel Comics at the time: Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, Erik Larsen, Jim Valentino, and Whilce Portacio. The company was created in part so that the artists could control the copyrights to the material they produced (whereas at Marvel they were work-for-hire artists with no ownership of the material). Image quickly became one of the four largest comic book publishers in America, along with Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and Dark Horse Comics.
One of the guiding principles of the company is that the creators, not Image Comics, own their work. As a result, the company itself owns no intellectual property with the exception of its name and logo.
