Jessica Abel

(1969- )

Jessica Abel is an American comic book creator who grew up in Evanston, Illinois, just north of Chicago. While attending the University of Chicago Abel published her first comics work in the student anthology Breakdown. During this time she also worked in the administration department of the Art Institute of Chicago.

After graduation, Abel began self-publishing a mini-comic titled Artbabe in 1991, which was eventually picked up by Fantagraphics Books. In the late '90s Abel began creating several journalistic comic strips for The University of Chicago Magazine and collaborated with Ira Glass on Radio: An Illustrated Guide as a companion to the NPR series This American Life.

After living for two years in Mexico City, Abel began work on La Perdida, her first novel-length comic book. She teaches at the School of Visual Arts and currently lives in Brooklyn.
